Internship Opportunities for Communication Studies and Media Arts Students

Students in Communication Studies and Media Arts have several options for internship experiences during their undergraduate studies. In an internship, students develop professional skills, explore career options, and connect their course learning with real-life communications and media workplaces.

There are two main internship pathways that Communication Studies and Media Arts students can pursue:

  1. Any Humanities student in Level II or above can apply for a paid, part-time or full-time internship through the Humanities Internship Program. After successfully applying for a job, students in the program will enroll in HUMAN 3IF1 or HUMAN 3IP1 (receiving 1 unit of pass/fail course credit) and pay a fee of $200. 2. Students in the Communication Studies and/or Media Arts programs can apply for CMST 3B03 Practical Aspects of Media Production and receive 3 units of course credit. Internships may be paid or unpaid are and consist of 104 hours of part-time work over the course of the fall or winter semester. Work schedules are set between the student and the internship supervisor. Students in CMST 3B03 meet regularly throughout the semester to learn about current issues facing the communications and media professions, discuss connections between classroom and experiential learning, and reflect on their placement experiences.

In past placements for CMST 3B03, the department has partnered with several organizations, including the Hamilton Bulldogs, the CBC, the Burlington Braves, Cobalt Connects, OPIRG, Sonic Unyon Records, St. Joseph’s Healthcare, CHUM, Bay Area Restoration Council, the Imperial Cotton Centre for the Arts, the Hockey News, Tourism Hamilton, CITY TV, CNN and many more.
